Our mission is to build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value and affirm LGBTQ people.
PFLAG of Clayton-Concord began as an idea - among some members of a local progressive church with a congregation that includes a number of LGBTQ+ people - to better connect with and advocate for the surrounding community. The first step was volunteering on the Rainbow Community Center’s Youth Coalition, which led to meeting long-time members of PFLAG of San Ramon Valley.
When the first meeting of the fledgling Clayton-Concord PFLAG branch was announced in September 2017, parents of LGBTQ+ young people with a passion for support were our first attendees. We modeled our first Gender and Sexualities Alliance Forum for Mt. Diablo Unified School District high school students in February 2018 on the successful example of San Ramon Valley (SRV) PFLAG and it became an annual event (unfortunately interrupted in 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic). After training and coaching our prospective Board members by SRV PFLAG, our chapter was recognized in December 2019 by PFLAG National.
In our short history, we’ve continued to grow in membership and in outreach, partnering with Rainbow Community Center for rainbow flag raisings, including flag raisings for the Town of Clayton and Mt. Diablo Unified School District, as well as supporting Pride on the Plaza which celebrates our LGBTQ+ community at Todos Santos Plaza.
We made history in April 2022 by sponsoring the first ever Pride Prom in Contra Costa County--and we're looking forward to this annual celebration.
We proudly serve the following East Bay communities:
